Emerge and See is an all medium, “community-oriented” festival that has over 50 participating artists and musicians all housed under one roof.  It’s a free-form event where many of the artists themselves have created part of the event; such as artist Lisa Norton who created an event poster; Martin Thoburn who created the promo video, most well-known for his video work for the Ann Arbor Film Fest; Kobie Solomon and other graffiti artists who will create works live; Vertical Ambition who will perform a live dance routine; and there’s even on-site screen printing by Progress of Design. The event will also feature work from Jaclyn Schanes, who just made national news with her genre busting exhibit/performance, Show Pony.

Emerge and See’s musical bill is as eclectic and genre-defying as the visual art, with such local acts as The Satin Peaches, Cold Men Young, stadium-rock powerhouses Neon Escape, and the buzz-worthy art rock of Lord Scrummage.

Attendees will be encouraged to participate in the kinetic creativity (milk jug/ plastic bottle installation to be created during the event by event attendees) underscoring the environmentally conscious and DIT (Do It Together) community ethos “we all can make a difference.”  With the recyclable plastic bottle installation attendees will be creating, Emerge and See will illustrate how much waste is really created by each one of us, hence the real “emergency” at hand, and how together we can make an appreciable difference to the community and to the ecology, expressing the most important issues that affect our planet.

Emerge and See strives to blend genres and blur categories and attempt to cover many mediums of expression – instruments, paints, dancing, graphic design, print design, crafting, handmade items, glass, jewelry, clothing, video, in a communal aural and visual celebration of one of the world’s most creative places – Detroit, Michigan!

On Saturday, July 31st, prepare to be blown away 3D-style at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI.  The third annual Phonotropical musical mayhem will lift off in another dimension, thanks to the creative works of artist Dan DeMaggio (free 3D glasses for everyone).  Freshtight Designs has a handful of tickets to give away right here on our site, so let the contest begin!  Performances by: Dale Earnhart, Jr. Jr., Bars of Gold, Lettercamp, Bear Lake, The Victorious Secrets, Jessica Hernandez and many more.

Also happening on Saturday is Freshtight Design’s featured artist, Jaclyn Schanes‘ first solo exhibition/performance called Show Pony, at the Re:View Contemporary Gallery in Detroit.  She is the epitome of “life as art” and “art as life” and has created everything herself from the soundtrack/score of the event to the watercolor paintings.  This is one exhibit you don’t want to miss.  One woman, two hours, a hundred layers of meaning.  Click here for more information.

At the center of the exhibit are approximately 35 small to medium watercolor self-portraits, which will be uniquely mounted and displayed in a strategic way as to facilitate performance by including the attendees into the experience. Schanes has recently embraced the often forgotten medium of watercolor, bringing both beauty and brutal directedness to her Neo-Expressionism influenced portraits, which will provide one layer of meaning in this two-hour art event.

Team Jellyfish, friends of Freshtight Designs, are training to participate in a half marathon as members of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training.

“We are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. We are completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line – a cure!”

Emerge and See is an annual live local art and music fusion event featuring some of the area’s best creative individuals.  Our goal is to bring the community together to witness a night of artists, authors and musicians with a do it together attitude rather than a do it yourself attitude.  There will be live performances by bands, DJs, emcees, breakdancers, graffiti artists and screen printers.

Last year we had over 400 attendees and press and interviews from such publications as The Detroit Free Press, Metromix, Metro Times, Real Detroit, as well as many others.

Interfaces 2010 is an annual conference promoting game design, graphic design, and digital media industries.

The conference will consist of presentations and panels showcasing different aspects of game production, graphic design, and digital media; portfolio reviews, and exhibitor space. Freshtight Designs will have an exhibitor space showcasing some of our latest work.

In 2009, there were over 400 people in attendance, but expect 2010 to be bigger and better. Attendees last year included industry professionals, creative professionals, faculty from local and national colleges and universities, as well as students.

Julie Lang

Julie is Associate Design Director at Campbell-Ewald advertising, dedicated primarily to the Chevrolet account. Through her 18 years in the industry she has worked as an illustrator, art director, magazine design director and as an independent in her own one-woman design firm. Her clients have included Herman Miller, Chevrolet and Detroit’s Epoch Restaurant Group. Her work has been recognized by publications and competitions including Communication Arts, AIGA, the ADDYS, the One Show and The Art Directors Club.

Jody Levy

Jody Levy is an artist and designer. She has been with experience design firm o2 Creative Solutions since the company’s inception in 2001. Jody works with the multi-disciplinary team at o2 to create interactive and immersive experiences such as live theatrical productions, museum and gallery exhibits, non-traditional communications campaigns and more. Jody is an artist and travel writer. Her travel website, Native Nomad, features the best experiences in cities across the globe.

Susan Skarsgard

Susan Skarsgard is an artist and designer known internationally for her original fine art works, site-specific installation art, graphic design, artist books, & calligraphy. Her work is widely collected by individuals and institutions which include the United States Library of Congress Rare Book Room; Newberry Library, Chicago, IL; University of Michigan Special Collections, San Francisco Public Library, and Smith College, Northampton, MA. As a lecturer and teacher, Ms.  Skarsgard has conducted workshops and presentations for numerous institutions, organizations, and conferences, traveling extensively throughout North America, Australia and Europe. She has worked for 15 years in the Industrial Design department at General Motors and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan.

Meet Liu Bolin, the Invisible Man, an artist with the ability to disappear.  This 36-year-old is able to blend into any surroundings – no matter how complicated they might be.

Actually, he paints himself to merge with whatever scenery is behind him.  But still, it’s pretty amazing.  In some of the pictures it takes a minute to spot him, and when viewed from a distance in real life, people have stated they don’t even notice him until he moves.

Liu Bolin graduated from the prestigious Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai.  He says that his work requires a lot of patience, sometimes spending 10 hours trying to get the details just right.  He says his intention is to show how city surroundings affect people living in them.  He is inspired by “not fitting in to modern society.”  He sees his work as a silent protest against the Government’s persecution of artists.

The Chinese authorities shut down his art studio in Beijing in 2005. Contemporary art was in quick development, but the Government decided it did not want artists to gather and live together.

“The situation for artists in China is very difficult,” he says.  “The forced removal of the artist’s studio is in fact my direct inspiration for this series, ‘Hiding in the city.’”
