Red Carpet Premiere - Saturday, November 20th at 8:00pm at The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor

I recently met Adrian Walker at the TEDxDetroit conference this past September, where I learned about his company, First Element Entertainment, and their most recent endeavor, a movie entitled The Art of Power.

It seemed like an intriguing story. We talked over lunch and I was pleasantly surprised when we realized our girlfriends work together at the Ross School of Business | University of Michigan.

A few weeks later I found out that The Art of Power is an official selection for the Detroit/Windsor International Film Festival. If that wasn’t enough to bring me out of the house to view it, the film premieres right down the street at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor!

Read the synopsis and view the trailer below, and come to the Red Carpet Premiere on Saturday, November 20th at 8:00pm if you’re free. Purchase Tickets.

“The Art of Power is a thriller about three unassuming young adults living in Washington D.C., whose lives are thrust into a twisted saga. The story follows an odd loner, Wesley, who, after seeing his world collapse beneath him, becomes obsessed with exacting revenge on the powerful senator whom he holds responsible.”

Michigan hosts a world-class collection of artists and designers who are dedicated to producing great work in a great place. Now more than ever, we should celebrate design as a vital engine in our state’s on-going recovery. Designers are problem solvers. Whether it’s a city designer working to solve the issue of affordable housing, or a graphic designer bringing legitimacy to a non-profit through branding, the range of conflicts designers encounter is infinite. It’s no secret that Michigan has significant problems, however every challenge the state presents is an opportunity for innovation.

Fede Alvarez’s YouTube video, “Ataque de Panico,” which features giant robots invading the city of Montevideo, has landed him a $30 million Hollywood movie deal.

Created on a budget of $300, “Ataque de Panico” (Panic Attack) shows the gigantic CGI humanoids capturing the capital of Uruguay as citizens flee. Alvarez says that after uploading the video on a Thursday, he was receiving offers from Hollywood on the Monday.

He eventually accepted a $30 million dollar deal from Ghost House Pictures for a full-length sci-fi thriller set in Uruguay and Argentina. The movie will be sponsored by director Sam Raimi, whose credits include the Spiderman and Evil Dead films. The movie, though, won’t be based on the YouTube video itself, Alvarez told the BBC.

While it makes for a remarkable story, you might be less surprised after watching the clip: it has a Hollywood polish that implies Alvarez’s work is ready for its big screen debut.

jumping between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and lo-fi folk

tUnE-yArDs is the singular musical project of New England native Merrill Garbus. Possessing an expansive sound that marries a coarse folk ingenuity with the bold pop sensibility of an R&B siren, BiRd-BrAiNs was assembled with a staunch DIY aesthetic.

Recording herself using a digital voice recorder and assembled using shareware mixing software, she was described by Stereogum as “a self-contained Sublime Frequencies compilation, jumping between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and lo-fi folk”, infusing the worldly sonic palette of M.I.A. or post-punk pioneers The Raincoats.
